Mamma Mia Restaurant, Rome

At the Mamma Mia restaurant in Rome, you can feel in the garden even when you are indoor. Palms and ferns are always in sight thanks to the play of beams and full-height windows that connects the rooms. The landscape project spreads along the margins of the architectures to create fluid and relaxing spaces. Evergreen species with glossy leaves make their way into the pavement with apparent spontaneity. The lightness of the Chamaedorea and the cheerfulness of the sphere-shaped pittosporum soften the rigor of the wooden structure designed by Labics. The soffused light filtering through the trees and the beams has inspired the botanical choices. Clouds of Peppermint and Soleirolia and arched leaves of Dryopteris recreate the freshness and charm of the tropical undergrowth. As evening falls, the garden of the Mamma Mia restaurant seems to expand into dark. The Cor-Ten volutes of the custom-made sculpture project the vegetation into a dreamlike dimension.

Giardino all’improvviso con scultura EGG (26)

The EGG garden is a glimpse of a primaeval world, guarded in a prestigious building in Como. A tiny garden designed to offer a scenographic setting to the offices at the ground floor. And, at the same time, an inspiring green environment to the upper floors. The dimmed light of the north-facing atrium suggested the idea of evoking a leap in time with landscape design. As in a virgin forest, ferns fill the inner ellipse of brown metal. In the outer one, quartzite chips evoke the sparkle of the water. Hydrangeas climb a diamond-shaped treillage while acanthus and periwinkle colonize the custom-made planters. The dark green foliage visually improves the depth of the scene. The very protagonist of the EGG garden is the cor-ten® steel sculpture, designed to evoke the mystery of the origins of life on Earth. The colour palette, set to natural hues, aims to improve the well-being of the working place. The design exploits the dynamic curves of the ellipses to obtain a lively composition. The vegetation favours species with dense foliage and exotic shapes to convey the image of an uncontaminated place.

Campus Spark, renovated farmhouse near Pavia

Design of the outdoor spaces of Campus Spark interprets the features of the traditional, Lombard agricultural landscape in a contemporary way. Here, manicured gardens, fruit trees, feathery hedges and canals tell the fashination of an international hi-tech firm for this old farmhouse. The location is near the Visconti’s Castle in Bereguardo (Pavia). The renovated architectures find a link with the territory thanks to the neat, compact aromatic carpet that illuminates the entrance courtyard. The design of the square raised bed incorporates a wide ramp granting a fully accessible environment. Persimmon and cherry trees and field maples await the first cold weather to colour autumn. High weaving grasses accompany the paths of the central courtyard and enclose the conversation and BBQ areas designed for the users of the multifunctional and coworking quarters. River Ticino and water of the typical nearby canals are recalled with a strip of river stones that runs along and under the walkways made of WPC wood. The new structures, including also a dining area, gym and rooms for selected guests shade the passage between the two main courtyards. This provides perfect growing conditions for a soothing, dense parterre of ferns and bigleaf periwinkle. Carefully studied coplanarity of paving materials and integration of ramps and level transitions in the design of the open spaces make the site comfortable and safe for everyone.

Impavida, craft brewery in Arco

Landscape design outside the box for Impavida, a creative craft brewery in Arco (Trentino, northern Italy). Shoots of hop (Humulus lupulus) and of Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) climb the architectures during summertime. Studied specimens of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) welcome the guests – a design choice to recall the rock walls enclosing the valley. The property boundaries are lined with fragrant Jasminum and tall cypress trees to let imagination run to the nearby Lake Garda. Enough? Not yet: Mediterranean aromatic shrubs and fruit trees surround the outdoor tables: a prodigy made possible by the mild climate of the area. Proportions and textures of the foliage integrate with the former industrial building, a recovery project by the Milan-based firm Genuizzi Banal. Appropriate selection and layout of species thriving in the same conditions help to reduce irrigation needs: a standard of Valerio Cozzi landscape design that here meets the philosophy of the Company on sustainable and circular economy.

Sketch of the bbq area planting design: laurel, rosemary, ornamental garlic and verbena… and an apple tree, that is a typical cultivation of Trentino. Maybe, who knows, one day Impavida will launch a new cider!

Hall Raimondi, Milan

Indoor landscaping of the Raimondi building atrium, at La Forgiatura’ complex, takes advantage of the bright architecture. Airy fronds of Howea forsteriana, Rhapis excelsa and Chamadorea metallica welcome employees and visitors. Planting is arranged in homogeneous masses: quartered behind the desk, gathered as if in conversation in the lounge area or arranged in a row like they were snooping around. The aim is to bring nature near, thus enhancing well-being in the workplace.
The lime green containers hide a trick. They are vessels filled with expanded clay and provided with a water reservoir. Hydroculture allows to minimize maintenance, water consumption and typical indoor plants diseases. The light cultivation substrate also facilitates staging operations for events.

La Forgiatura Milano – corten planters with lawn

Industrial SITE reDEVELOPMENT: a new match between people and space through LANDSCAPE design.

Hardscape and softscape design build a bridge between past and present times. Today, La Forgiatura is a multifunctional area in the north-west area of Milan. It hosts fashion brands, ICT and pioneering medical companies. Today’s extraordinary complex rises from a former industrial site area, hence the name of the place, meaning ‘forge’. In the nineteenth century La Forgiatura produced special steel components, exporting them all over the world. The regeneration of the area, that took place at the turn of the first decade of 2000, has been attracting new investors and is still on the move.

I joined the design team as landscape designer since the very beginning

Since then, I have been connecting and upgrading La Forgiatura buildings with outdoor and indoor green solutions. During the years, I have been developing and tuning landscape in accord with evolving functions, tenants and key figures. I also had the chance to design tailored wayfinding to welcome and address people and traffic.
Landscape project features sharp designed hills, 1 to 8 m high, that generate a dynamic relationship with buildings. Neat lawn surfaces mirror and multiply glass facades. At each change of the season, the widespread vegetation recalls the sense of renovation that turned the old factory sheds into energy-efficient buildings and spaces to share.

The area offers plenty of green shades

Outside, vegetation may flow smoothly besides the concrete paths, or create a green band over property limits. The advent of new companies creates new planting isles defining new ways to enjoy the location. At La Forgiatura, plants are not scared by heights: they grow on the Astronave terrace, scramble over steep hills, climb or trail down from the structure. Indoor green welcomes workers and guests at the Hall Raimondi, or creates peaceful isles where to enjoy a break or a chat.

what’s next?

La Forgiatura is an inspirational and exciting place where to work as landscape designer, because it’s a place that attracts enterprising people and where things move fast. It’a also a regeneration landmark in Milan with well-established vegetation that has good stories to tell anytime you come by. What’s next? I look forward to discovering it.

Green walls for a bank courtyard, Milan

Green walls design is able to reinterpret a courtyard with flamboyant greenery respecting the original atmosphere. In Milan, contemporary vertical green techniques and classic local plant species converge to create a welcoming environment. A hidden treasure for customers and employees of the city branch of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Being an intervention on a building in the historic centre, I first arranged the submission of the project to the Landscape Commission of the Metropolitan City of Milan. Following, I drove the Client’s requests to construction project level, helped to select providers, then coordinated and supervised the whole construction process. The peculiarity of this three-storey green courtyard project is the masking of the thickness of the supporting structure of the green wall systems by adding bright coloured thresholds and frames. The continuity between architecture and green walls is reinforced by the integration of the fertigation and recirculation system into the existing flooring. The natural effect of this ‘upward courtyard’ is amplified by the use of typical yet often underestimated species of Milanese courtyards such as Bergenia cordifolia, Vinca major and Campanula spp.
